Spring has sprung in around the country (mostly), people are digging out their summer tennis shoes, jogging outfits and zumba gear. That is admirable that people want to get out to enjoy the sunny weather, after a seemingly long winter season. What isn’t admirable, is that so many haven’t been exercising throughout winter.
Starting exercise again after such a long period of inactivity can cause bodily harm. Trying to go jogging on a trail or track can snap those tendons, then you’ll be out of action for weeks, maybe most of the summer. Want to spend that time in physical therapy? It may be tempting to start a high-octane aerobic class but did you remember you haven’t been stretching or doing those exercises at home for a few months? You may cause pulled or strained muscles.
We all have the best of intentions over the winter and it is perfectly normal for us to lay low, pamper ourselves during cold, dry winter months with comfort food around a fire and hot cocoa with marshmallows, watching our favorite movies under blankets and quilts. If you have been inactive for a long period of time, ease yourself into exercising when the weather warms up and check your warm weather workout gear.
Now would be the time to treat yourself to a new pair of tennis shoes that you’ve been saving your money by clipping coupons all winter. Go to your health care professional and ask for a check up to determine if you’re healthy enough to start exercising: ask for some tips! Want to start walking or jogging but don’t want to go by yourself? Check the community services and health care communities in your area for walking groups. There are even websites and online classifies that have numbers of walking groups!
So take care of yourself and enjoy the beautiful Spring weather.
